A lethal effect associated with polymorphism of the NOR-bearing chromosomes in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Porto-Foresti,Fábio; Oliveira,Claudio; Gomes,Eduardo A.; Tabata,Yara A.; Rigolino,Marcos G.; Foresti,Fausto.
Cytogenetic analysis of a rainbow trout stock showed that the nucleolar organizing regions were located subterminally on the long arm of a submetacentric chromosome pair and occurred as a single chromosomal segment (phenotype N1) or as two chromosomal segments separated by a short euchromatic segment (phenotype N2). Cytogenetic analysis also showed that there were N1N1 and N1N2 individuals but no N2N2 individuals. Analysis of the different includedphenotypes incluted that the population was not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (chi² = 19.333; p < 0.01), and that a higher frequency of individuals had the N1N2 phenotype. Experimental crosses involving four males (two N1N1 and two N1N2) and four females (one N1N1 and three N1N2) yielded eight broods. There...

Analysis of NOR distribution in cultivated and naturalized stocks of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Porto-Foresti,Fábio; Oliveira,Claudio; Tabata,Yara A.; Rigolino,Marcos G.; Foresti,Fausto.
In salmonid species, nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) have frequently been found on a single chromosome pair. However, some other, smaller yet active NORs have also been described. In the present study, NORs were found to be located in different positions on the chromosomes of 12 rainbow trout samples (11 cultivated and one naturalized stocks). Three phenotypes were found: 1) NORs located on two submetacentric chromosomes, in a subterminal position on the short arm (AA); 2) NORs located on two submetacentric chromosomes, in a subterminal position on the long arm (BB); and 3) NORs located on two submetacentric chromosomes, one in a subterminal position on the short arm, and the other in a subterminal position on the long arm (AB). Phenotype AA was...

Chromosome divergence and NOR polymorphism in Bryconamericus aff. iheringii (Teleostei, Characidae) in the hydrographic systems of the Paranapanema and Ivaí Rivers, Paraná, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Capistano,Thiago Gomes; Castro,Ana Luiza de Brito Portela; Julio-Junior,Horácio Ferreira.
Cytogenetic studies were carried out in three populations of Bryconamericus aff. iheringii from two hydrographic systems of the Paranapanema and Ivaí Rivers, separated by a watershed, both belonging to the upper Paraná River basin. Specimens had a constant diploid number 2n = 52 chromosomes. However, three karyotype formulae were identified in the three populations: B. aff. iheringii from the Maringá stream had 12M+18SM+8ST+14A (FN = 90); specimens from Keller River showed 8M+28SM+6ST+10A (FN = 94) and specimens from the Tatupeba stream had 8M+20SM+8ST+16A (FN = 88). Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were identified by silver nitrate staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with an 18S rDNA probe. Specimens from Tatupeba stream had a simple...

Cytogenetic analysis and chromosomal characteristics of the polymorphic 18S rDNA in the fish Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes, Prochilodontidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Almeida,Mara Cristina de; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos; Moreira-Filho,Orlando; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira.
We used differential staining techniques (BSG, GTG, AgNO3, DAPI and CMA3 banding) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 5S and 18S probes to investigated the karyotypic and cytogenetic chracteristics of Prochilodus lineatus specimens from a population in Vila Velha state park (Parque Estadual de Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Paraná state, southern Brazil). The specimens studied showed the same karyotype as that found in other P. lineatus populations, i.e. 2n = 54 biarmed chromosomes (40m + 14 sm) and c-positive heterochromatin preferentially located pericentromerically in all chromosomes. The presence of partial or totally heterochromatic supernumerary chromosomes with numeric intra-individual variation was confirmed in the analyzed population. The...

Cytogenetic studies in three species of Lutjanus (Perciformes: Lutjanidae: Lutjaninae) from the Isla Margarita, Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology
Nirchio,Mauro; Rondón,Rodolfo; Oliveira,Claudio; Ferreira,Irani A.; Martins,Cesar; Pérez,Julio; Sola,Luciana; Rossi,Anna Rita.
In the present study, three species of Lutjaninae, Lutjanus analis, L. griseus and L. synagris, were analyzed by conventional Giemsa staining, C-banding and silver staining, to reveal active Nucleolus Organizer Regions (NORs). Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) was also applied to establish the number and location of the ribosomal gene clusters (18S and 5S rRNA genes). Counts of diploid metaphasic cells revealed a diploid modal chromosome complement composed of 48 acrocentric chromosomes in both L. analis and L. griseus. Two cytotypes were observed in L. synagris: cytotype I, with 2n=48 acrocentric chromosomes, found in 19 specimens, and cytotype II, with 46 acrocentric chromosomes and one large metacentric, found in two specimens. The large...
